Behind the Stars: How I Rate Books

Understanding My Audiobook Star Rating System

As an avid audiobook listener, one of the things I love most is sharing my experiences with others and recommending books I’ve enjoyed (or sometimes, books I haven’t). But before I dive into recommendations, it’s important to explain how I rate the audiobooks I listen to, so you can understand the context behind my reviews. Audiobooks are a unique experience, and the way I rate them takes that into account.

Why Audiobooks Are Different

Unlike traditional reading, audiobooks have an extra layer to consider: the narrator(s). The voice behind the book can make or break the experience. A captivating narrator can elevate a story, making even the simplest plot come alive, while a poor narrator can leave a good story feeling flat. This is something I factor heavily into my ratings—because if the narration doesn’t work for me, it can affect how I feel about the entire book.

With that in mind, here’s a breakdown of how I rate my audiobooks, based on a 5-star system.

1 Star – Did Not Finish (DNF)

A 1-star rating means I didn’t finish the book. For whatever reason, I just couldn’t get into it. It could be that the narrator didn’t engage me, the pacing was too slow, or the story just didn’t resonate with me at the time. Sometimes, I might not be in the right mood for a particular book, and while I may revisit it later, I couldn’t finish it the first time around. In this category, I don’t recommend the book because I couldn’t even finish it myself.

2 Stars – Struggled Through It

A 2-star rating means I finished the book, but it wasn’t an enjoyable experience. I struggled through it, whether it was because of the narrative style, a lackluster plot, or a narrator who didn’t connect with me. While I may have gotten to the end, it wasn’t a book I would recommend. Books that fall into the 2-star category tend to feel like a chore to get through, and I usually don’t feel compelled to suggest them to others.

3 Stars – Good, But Not Memorable

A 3-star book is one that I enjoyed, but it didn’t have the kind of impact that sticks with me. It’s a solid read/listen, one I’m happy to recommend to people who I think would enjoy it. I finished the book and had a good time with it, but when I think back on it, I might not remember all the details or feel a strong emotional connection. It’s the type of book that’s enjoyable while you’re listening but fades from your memory relatively quickly. That said, I’ll still share it with others, as I think it could resonate with the right person.

4 Stars – Great, Worth Recommending

A 4-star book is one I consider to be great. It’s well-rounded, and I would recommend it to most readers without hesitation. These books stick with me, and I often find myself thinking about them months or even years later. I might bring them up when talking to friends about books or include them in a list of recommendations. These books might not be “perfect,” but they stand out and leave a lasting impression. If you’re looking for a solid recommendation, a 4-star book is always a safe bet.

5 Stars – Life-Changing, Must-Read Books

Finally, a 5-star book is a rarity. These are the books that completely captivate me, alter my perspective, or deeply move me. They’re the kinds of books that all readers should experience, and they transcend the typical reading experience. I consider a 5-star book to be life-changing in some way, and I can count the number of these books on one hand. These are the stories that stick with me for years, that I’ll re-read or listen to again, and that I will eagerly recommend to anyone who asks for a book suggestion. They’re the ones that leave a permanent mark on my heart and mind.

The Fun of Sharing Books

Part of the joy of reading (or listening to audiobooks) for me is being able to talk about the stories I’ve encountered. I love sharing books I enjoyed, hearing about other people’s favorites, and finding new recommendations. Rating books helps me articulate my experience and make it easier to offer suggestions to others.

Audiobooks, in particular, provide a whole new layer of experience to consider, and the right narrator can elevate a good book to great heights. That’s why, when you see my ratings, you can be assured that I’m not just considering the plot but also how the narration influenced my overall experience.

If you’re looking for a good audiobook recommendation, you’ll find plenty of 3- and 4-star books in my reviews. But if you want something that truly stands out and leaves an impact, keep an eye out for the rare 5-star gems that I can’t stop talking about.

Happy listening!
